CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Kids in Camden can finally take a break from the summer heat with a swim, now that its public pools are open.

Camden’s public pools were supposed to be open by July 1st but maintenance issues meant the kids had to wait a bit longer before diving in the shallow end. Now fully functional, Mayor Victor Carstarphen celebrated the opening of North Camden Community Center’s pool by putting on his bathing suit and Temple University t-shirt and jumping in.

“That could be some little things things like that that could push the date a few days back,” he said. “The reality of it is I’m so confident in our staff.”

The Mayor also credited multiple city departments, including human services, who worked tirelessly to open Camden’s two public pools.

Gregory Regan is in his third year as a lifeguard. He’s happy the pools are finally open, saying it’s nice when the community gets together.

“Everybody’s nice, they get along with each other,” he said. “I like seeing kids make new friends. We have a great time out here.”

The mayor also announced the city's giving away air conditioners and fans to residents in need to stay cool amid sweltering summer temperatures.
