The Yoemen football team fell to La Grange in a heartbreaking overtime defeat, losing 52-49, on Friday night in La Grange.

Cameron fans got a glimpse of what the 2024 Yoemen will look like under new head coach Aaron Babino and got a thriller on the road.

The Yoemen got on the scoreboard first when Elijah Goodrum ran the ball in the end zone for a touchdown off a pass from quarterback, Jacoby Scott, to take a 7-0 lead. The Leopards responded back with a 14-0 run to make the score 14-7, which would be the score at the end of the first quarter.

Cameron answered back in the second quarter with a 14-yard touchdown run by Jacoby Scott to make it a 14-13 deficit following a failed two-point conversion.

La Grange then extended their lead 21-13 from a rushing touchdown, but the Yoemen answered with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Brody Aguirre for a score of 21-20. La Grange answered right back with a kickoff return for a touchdown to make the score 28-20, which would be the score going into halftime.

The Leopards scored the first points of the third quarter with a 14-0 run to go ahead 42-20. Cade Hubnik then took over at quarterback for the Yoemen and helped break the drought with a 6-yard touchdown run to make it a 42-27 deficit, which would be the score at the end of the third quarter.

Cameron started the second quarter strong, continuing the comeback with 15 more unanswered points to tie the game at 42.

La Grange took back the lead with an 84-yard touchdown run to go ahead 49-42.

The Yoemen rallied back in the last minute of the game with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Cade Hubnik to Tim Grice to tie the game at 49 and send the game to overtime.

The Yoemen had the ball first to start overtime and were forced to send out Homero Najera to kick the field goal. The field goal was no good for a turnover on downs. The Leopards were next on offense and couldn’t move very far, also setting for a field goal. The kick was good and the Yoemen would fall 52-49.

Jacoby Scott played a great game, throwing for 81 yards and two touchdowns along with rushing for 26 yards and a touchdown. Cade Hubnik was also very effective, throwing for 119 yards and two touchdowns, along with rushing for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Tim Grice was tough to bring down, rushing for 202 yards along with catching a touchdown as well. Antonio Vargas was fantastic, catching five passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Next up for the Yoemen will be their home opener against the Sealy Tigers. The game will be Friday, Sept. 3 and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Yoe Field.
