The Cameron Yoemen soccer team traveled to Waco to take on the La Vega Pirates on Friday, Feb. 6. The Yoemen were shut out by La Vega, losing 4-0. Cameron returned home on Tuesday, Feb. 9, to host the Mexia Blackcats. The Yoemen were defeated by Mexia, losing a heartbreaker 1-0.

Cameron applied some early pressure within the first ten minutes of the first half, but that soon diminished as Mexia began to flip field position and go on the offensive. The Blackcats sent a barrage of shots on goal in the 13th minute, but were denied, including three saves by goalie, Xavier Gilmon, in the span of a few seconds. Cameron had several chances in the 36th minute with a free kick and a corner kick, but came up short on both, and the teams went into halftime tied at 0.

The second half started even as neither team could gain too much flow on offense. Both teams throughout the half exchange missed shots on goal and saves. The Yoemen were four minutes away from finishing the game tied at 0, but Mexia came through with a late goal in the 76th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Cameron gave it everything they had to tie the game, but it wasn’t enough and fell to Mexia 1-0.

With this loss, Cameron has an overall record of 5-9 and a district record of 3-4. The Yoemen remained home on Tuesday, Feb. 13, to host the Hearne Eagles.

Up next, the Yoemen will stay home to host the Waco Connally Cadets. The game will be Friday, Feb. 16, and is set to start at 7 p.m.
