News Briefs: Yonkers Man Charged in Crash on Route 59 in Spring Valley; Orange County Woman Pleads Guilty To Trying to Hire Hitman
A Yonkers man following a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday night in Spring Valley that left nine people injured including two police officers. That’s according to News 12. 54-year-old Nelson Torres was reportedly spotted by police in his car on westbound Route 59 between New Clarkstown Road and Dutch Lane just before 7pm. The engine was running, and the car was in “Drive,” but he was not responsive. When police tried to break a window to get to him, he reportedly fled, causing the crash and intentionally ramming his car into police cruisers that had been set up to stop him. Torres was taken to Montefiore Nyack Hospital for medical and psychological checks. He was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing, reckless driving, and several other charges.

NEWBURGH – The Shot Spotter alert system in Newburgh did its job for a second time this week with activation of shots being fired in the city. This time, minutes after midnight Thursday morning, gunshots were reported in the area of 123 Chambers Street with several shell casings located in the area.

The fire, deemed “suspicious” by authorities including the State Police and Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division, prompted an investigation. But, after eight years, no one has been arrested.

Sheriff's office quickly dispels active shooter rumor at Disney World after fight, 'popping' sound
A fight at Disney World's Magic Kingdom Park and a “popping” sound caused a disruption among visitors and rumors of an active shooter that were quickly put to rest by the county sheriff's office. The Orange County Sheriff's Office confirmed that there was no active shooter at the park on Thursday night. The sheriff's office posted the following on social media: “There is NO active shooter at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. A fight occurred, and a “popping” sound was heard that we believe was a balloon. Guests began running and that’s how the active shooter rumor started. There is no active shooter.”No one was arrested, a spokesperson for the office said Friday. Visitors at the park posted accounts that people were running and children were crying amid the confusion. A Disney World spokesperson issued a statement thanking the sheriff's office for its immediate response and said normal operations resumed at the park.
