New three-way stop coming to high-traffic area by Canandaigua Lake

CANANDAIGUA, NY — Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 7, the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and the City Pier near Canandaigua Lake will become a three-way stop.

The area is seeing more pedestrians and bicyclists in addition to the usual Kershaw Park and City Pier activity, Canandaigua City Manager John Goodwin said.

Busy Main Street feeds into the lakeshore area at the entrance and exit to the City Pier, where popular businesses such as New York Kitchen, Murphy's Law pub, Scoops ice cream, COHO Pizza & Wine and the recently opened JP's Wine & Beer Tap Room are drawing customers.

Motorists also find the intersection confusing because of its existing configuration, Goodwin said.

The hope is the signs will alleviate concerns and improve pedestrian safety.

“We’ve had numerous concerns raised about it,” Goodwin said. “Fortunately, we haven’t had any major incidents there but we’re trying to do this to prevent an incident.”

The city in recent years had installed a no-left-turn sign from the pier onto Lakeshore Drive. That will be removed for the stop signs.

Why not a roundabout at this spot near Canandaigua Lake?

Several other problem intersections in Ontario County have tried roundabouts, with good results. In fact, a roundabout has been recommended here not once, but twice.

In 1996, back when Kershaw Park and Lakeshore Drive were redone, a roundabout was recommended but never constructed.

Three years ago, as part of the city’s waterfront active transportation plan, a roundabout was again recommended for the intersection.

But a roundabout proved not to be an easy fix, Goodwin said.

First, the cost would be in the millions of dollars, Goodwin said. The city also would lose parking, which is at a premium at the lake.
