    Man killed following storm in Canastota identified

    Update at 9:45 a.m. on July 17, 2024: 82-year-old Robert Popple was identified as the person who was found dead on Main Street, in Canastota.

    Madison County says that the Village of Canastota is still under a State of Emergency:

    • Barlow Street
    • Main Street between Center Street and James Street
    • Buck Street from Center to Barlow Street

    A spokesperson for the county adds that the worst damage is in the village and the City of Oneida.

    Clean-up efforts begin today .

    CANASTOTA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) –One person has died in Canastota as a result of the storms on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, according to Jeremy Ryan, the village administrator.

    State of Emergency Declared Due to Storm Damage

    Due to the storm damage, a State of Emergency has been issued for the Northern part of Madison County, including Lenox and Canastota.

    There are numerous trees down and power outages through these areas.  Many roads are impassable.  Crews are still assessing all of the damage.

    Barlow Street in Canastota is under mandatory evacuation.  There is a shelter set up at the VFW on Canal Road.

    There is no unnecessary travel in these locations at this time. If you do need to travel, please use caution. If you come upon any roads that are impassable due to water or downed trees, please turn around.
