    Around town: Outlining the highlights of Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest

    There’s no dearth of festivities at Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest, but if you find yourself looking for a stroll, there’s plenty to take in around town Sept. 12-15.

    Among the numerous venues that make up the Oktoberfest experience is a variety of events and décor that harken back to the Old World.

    Downtown

    The Harvest Monument: The official symbol of the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest will once again show off the importance of agriculture in the area. This year, Daniel Fry is the artist.The Glockenspiel will play at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily, as it always does, during the festival. Stop by to see the six life-sized, hand-carved wooden figures tell the story of Mount Angel.Arts and crafts show: This year, it includes over 120 artisans selling their wares. The booths will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.Maibaum: “The Tree of Trades” shows off the symbols of the businesses, services and skills that make Mount Angel, Mount Angel.

    St. Mary's Public School

    Cruz ‘n Car Show: Featuring about 100 vehicles from oldies and muscle cars, the festivities run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There will be a different set of cars each day. Want to get involved? Register your vehicle beginning at 8 a.m. either day. No preregistration is required. Trophies will be awarded for 30 categories at 3 p.m. each day.The highlight of Sunday’s Oktoberfest lineup, don’t miss the wiener dog races at noon. Held rain or shine, as many as 70 dachshunds will give it their all in a race against their peers. Preregister online at oktoberfest.org/wiener-dog-races or hope to claim a stop as a walk-in competitor. Registration is $10, and each pup must have proof of rabies vaccination at registration.

    Evergreen Golf Course

    To raise money for Kennedy High’s junior golf team, the 18-hole tournament returns to the local course Saturday, Sept. 14. Check in begins at 7 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts, and lunch and prizes follow the event around 1 p.m.

    Kennedy High School

    Work for your beer! The 5k and 10k races are set to set out at 9 a.m. Sunday from Kennedy High School. Break out your lederhosen, dirndls and running shoes, as each participant will receive a commemorative pint glass. And for those over 21 years old, runners will also get a free beer ticket. Awards will be given for age groups and overall winners. Register online at tinyurl.com/ahrrynmb .

    Bandstand

    Learn a polka or Schottische starting at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening during the street dance parties at the bandstand. All ages and skill levels are welcome to get their grooves on.
