On a quiet, slightly cloudy Saturday morning, there were classic cars as far as the eye could see in downtown Canby.

The annual Cutsforth’s Cruise-in at the Park continued the fun of Big Weekend in downtown Canby on Aug. 24, and although Frank Cutsforth wasn’t part of the festivities for the first time in three decades, his presence was certainly felt.

Just ask some of those in attendance.

“I used to be in a couple car clubs and we’d come to Canby for the event and Frank and his group always did things really well,” said Henry Spillman, who drove over from the coast to look around. “I’d read he passed away and hadn’t been to the show in many years, so thought I’d get up early (6 a.m.) and come in to pay respects to his efforts. So many cars and people here, it’s a testament to the work he and his folks had done year after year.”

When the weather cooperates, the annual cruise-in attracts upwards of 700 cars of all years, makes and models to the streets surrounding Wait Park. And this year was no exception as the streets were filled with muscle cars, old trucks, motorcycles, a hearse and all kinds of other classic vehicles.

And just about everywhere you turned, there was a grateful attendee who was saddened by Cutsforth’s passing.

“I come every year and was saddened to read that Frank had passed,” said Dillon Sparks, who rolled in from the Dallas area. “They do a great job with this show and I’m really happy that his legacy, and I’m sure he has more than a few in this area, is continuing on with this car show. It’s fantastic and certainly built to last into the future. Well done, Frank.”

Through the classic cars and a wide array of vendors, the sounds of the K.I.S.N. Good Guys and Willamette Valley Big Band helped set a festive mood to a special event in downtown Canby.

    When the Streets Dance

Virgil Knowles looked into the sky and thought there were good signs in the partly cloudy skies.

Canby’s annual Big Night Out Street Dance was about to get rolling and the day had featured a couple significant downpours during the day, but Knowles, who has lived off and on in the Canby area for decades, thought the worst was over.

“I think we’re going to be okay,” he said. “Maybe a drizzle, but I’m hoping things will go off without getting drenched.”

When Return Flight hit the stage and began to rock downtown Canby, it appeared that few folks were put off by even a potential for rain. The streets were filled, vendors were doing brisk business, and the street dance was off and running.

“This is so much fun every year,” Knowles added. “It’s just a wonderfully fun and relaxed way to kind of get out, have some fun, and sort of reset for the coming of fall. And this year’s it’s pleasant from a temperature standpoint. Seems just about every year it’s really hot. I think that’s a bonus this year.”

By the time Nate Botsford hit the stage around 8 p.m., things were rolling and another street dance was offering a goodbye to the summer.
