Boil water advisory issued for city of Caney

    2024-07-26

CANEY, Kan. (KOAM) - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Caney public water supply system in Montgomery County, effective July 26. The advisory will remain in place until conditions that risk bacterial contamination are resolved.

The advisory was issued due to a water line break, resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. This can lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and potential bacterial contamination. KDHE officials have provided the following guidelines for residents once water service resumes:

    • Boil water for one minute before drinking or using it for food preparation, or use bottled water.
    • Dispose of ice cubes and avoid using ice from household automatic icemakers.
    • If tap water appears dirty, flush water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
    • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water containing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
    • Water used for bathing generally does not need to be boiled, but children should be supervised to prevent ingestion. Individuals with cuts or severe rashes should consult their physicians.

Only the KDHE can rescind the advisory after testing the water at a certified laboratory confirms it is safe to use. Residents are advised to follow these precautions until further notice.
