    Canfield native advances at US Olympic Trials

    EUGENE, Ore. (WKBN) – Canfield native and Virginia Tech runner Nick Plant advanced to the semifinals in the men’s 800-meter run during the first round of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Thursday.

    Plant finished in 5th place in his heat and 13th overall (out of 35 runners) with a time of 1:46.88 to secure a Top 6 finish in Heat 4 to advance to the semis on Friday.

    A two-time state champion in the 800 during his time at Canfield, Plant most recently placed Top 8 at the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship to cap off his sophomore year at VT.

    Twenty-seven total runners advanced to the semis in the men’s 800 with three more heats to take place Friday. Top 2 from each semi will advance along with the three next fastest times to head to the final on Sunday.

    The men’s 800 semi-finals is currently set to begin at 9:39 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, June 28.
