Movie filming in Salem seeking deaf and hard of hearing people to work as extras
Another movie is filming in Oregon this summer, and there’s a casting call for people who are deaf, hard or hearing and/or fluent in American Sign Language to work as extras. The movie, “Flash Before the Bang,” is inspired by a true story about an all-deaf high school track and field team trying to achieve victory at the 1986 Oregon State Track and Field Championship.
Monthly public safety fee going up for residents of east Salem
Fees are going up for people who live in unincorporated east Salem. Starting this month, the public safety fee will rise to $11 per month from $10 per month. It will continue to go up in July 2025 by $1 per month to $12 per month and continue to go up by $1 per month each fiscal year through at least 2027.
Referee approves 80-townhouse land division
As expected, a referee has ruled for the City of Albany in two property owners’ appeal over a planned 80-lot subdivision in North Albany. Audrey Eldridge and Brad Dennis, both owners in North Albany, had challenged the city’s approval of Riverwood Crossing, a development of 80 townhouses along a new section of Laura Vista Drive south of Gibson Hill Road.

Demolition of Cascade Middle School now underway
EUGENE, Ore. – Out with the old, in with the new, as they say. The second-oldest building in Eugene’s Bethel School District is being reduced to dust. Demolition work is currently underway on Cascade Middle School, which was built in 1955, and a new school has been built to replace it. The new school, which was built right next door to the 69-year-old building, will be ready for students to move into it when they return in the fall, according to school district officials.
