Crews are responding to Washington Street in Canton after a tractor trailer struck a utility pole, bringing down other poles and damaging several other wires and power lines, officials said.

Police issued a traffic advisory for the area of 95 Washington St., also known as Cobbs Corner, a popular local destination with several businesses and restaurants.

“Expect heavy delays in the area throughout the day. There will be NO access to the intersection, seek alternate routes,” police advised.

An 18-wheeler truck hit a low wire, which pulled down a pole and power was lost to Cobb Corner businesses, Deputy Fire Chief Scott Johnson said in a statement.

Eversource and Verizon are on scene and “should be on scene all day repairing the damage,” Johnson said.

About 2,200 customers briefly lost power when the crash occurred at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Eversource spokesperson Priscilla Ress said in a statement.

“Our crews are on the scene on Washington Street in Canton making repairs after a truck rammed into a utility pole bringing down two poles and causing damage to four poles along with the electrical equipment and power lines,” Ress said.

A remote system operator restored power to more than 2,000 customers in about four minutes using smart switches in Eversource’s electric system, Ress said.

About 115 customers are expected to have power back on by Thursday night.
