CANTON ‒ A 20-year-old woman has been charged with multiple criminal criminal offenses alleging that she accidentally hit her 5-month-old son in the head with a cake knife, causing serious injury.

A police report said the infant suffered a skull fracture, brain bleed and a gash on his head that was 1-2 inches deep. The wound required stitches.

The mother, a Plain Township resident, is charged with felonious assault, domestic violence and endangering children. She is scheduled to have a status hearing in Canton Municipal Court on Monday.

The incident happened at a house on Fifth Street NW in Canton. Police were called at 12:59 a.m. July 1.

The mother told a detective that she threw the cake cutter at a 42-year-old man who lives in a neighboring apartment.

But that was not her first story.

She and another woman initially told police that the mother bumped into something on the stove, causing the cake knife to fall onto the baby's head. They said it happened during an argument in the kitchen. They said the baby had been in a car seat that was backed against the stove.

The injured child was initially taken to Aultman Hospital by his grandmother. Medics who transported him to Akron Children's Hospital told police the baby became unresponsive during the trip. Police reported that he was alert, screaming and crying after arriving at the Akron hospital.

Children Services of Stark County Job & Family Services placed the victim in foster care. He was expected to be placed with a relative.

He had left the hospital by Tuesday afternoon. A welfare check was to be performed on the defendant's other child.
