    Things to do in Stark: John Trapani farewell, Minerva fun, drag bingo, Sippo Lake symphony

    Here are eight fun things to do in Stark County this weekend:

    1. John Trapani farewell concert

    Longtime local big band leader John Trapani will be giving his farewell concert Friday during the 2nd Friday event in downtown Louisville.

    The John Trapani Big Band performs songs by Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Harry James and other musicians of the genre. Trapani is retiring this year.

    The free show starts at 7 p.m. 2nd Friday, which runs 5-10 p.m., has a patriotic theme, and attendees are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue.

    A bike decorating contest begins at 5 p.m. A bike parade starts at 6 p.m.

    2nd Friday also will feature food vendors, a beer garden, farmers market and Umbrella Alley. Artwork will be presented by the Louisville Nimishillen Historical Society.

    2. 'The Women of Lockerbie' on stage at Malone

    "The Women of Lockerbie" will be presented on stage at Malone University the next three weekends.

    Directed by Craig Joseph of Seat of the Pants productions, performances will be 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, as well as July 19-21 and July 26-28.

    Loosely based on the aftermath of the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 , "the play examines how we grieve, care for one another, and live with hope," the show announcement said.

    Priced $20 to $32, tickets are available through https://www.eventbrite.com/ . Tickets also can be purchased at the door, but advance online purchasing is suggested because performance sometimes sell out.

    Performances will be at Founders Hall at Malone University , 425 25th St. NW in Canton.

    3. Vinyl record drag bingo at The Auricle

    The Auricle will host vinyl record drag bingo on Friday night in downtown Canton.

    Erie St Vinyl in Massillon and Quonset Hut in Canton are presenting the event with The Auricle, 201 Cleveland Ave. NW.

    Kardi Redd Diamond and Dakota Cox are hosting vinyl record drag bingo, where participants have a chance to win new and vintage records.

    Admission costs $10, which includes five double bingo cards. Additional cards will cost $2 each. Admission will be paid at the door; cash and credit cards are accepted.

    The bar opens at 7 p.m. Bingo starts at 8 p.m.

    4. Downtown Minerva fun

    2nd Friday will be celebrated 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in downtown Minerva, feature shopping, food, art, live music and drinks.

    The event is also known as Nights on North Market.

    The Market Street Art Spot , 113 N Market St., will host a reception 5 to 9 p.m. for the "Shadows & Light" exhibition showcasing the therapeutic and meditative art of Kim Bader, whose daughter Sophia Bader will be playing guitar.

    West High Street, between North Market and Main streets, will be the site of a pop-up pocket park, with live music 6 to 9 p.m. from Kindred Roots. There also will be a dunk tank, bounce houses, face painting and crafters.

    Food vendors will be on High Street. The village’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area will be in effect from 4 to 10 p.m.

    5. North Canton art show featuring Christopher Duncan

    North Canton Public Library's Little Art Gallery will open a new exhibit today featuring the work of Christopher Duncan .

    “Subconscious Communication" will be displayed through Aug. 31, 2024. The Little Art Gallery is at 185 N. Main St.

    An opening reception with the artist will be hosted from 5:30 to 7 p.m. by the Friends of the Little Art Gallery. The event is open to the public.

    6. Massillon Island Party

    Massillon Museum will host an Island Party from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at 121 Lincoln Way E.

    Event parking is available in the city's municipal lot behind the museum and next to Duncan Plaza in downtown Massillon.

    The Caribbean and Hawaiian-inspired event is free. Bringing blankets and chairs is suggested.

    Western Stark County fun: What's new at the Mu? Museum 'thank you' Island Party set Friday

    At Duncan Plaza, next to the museum, Carlos Jones will perform roots reggae music at 7:15 and 9 p.m.

    Food trucks also will be available. No outside food, beverages or coolers may be brought into the event. The museum's galleries will be open until 7 p.m.

    7. MusicCall of the Wild at Sippo Lake Park

    Members of the Canton Symphony Orchestra will perform at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Sippo Lake Park, 5712 12th St. NW in Perry Township.

    The performance will be on the Exploration Gateway back patio.

    Both music and live animals will be featured. Concessions will be available for purchase. In the case of poor weather, the concert will be moved inside Exploration Gateway, but spacing would limited.

    The free concert is part of the symphony's Summer Serenades in the Park series.

    8. Art show remembering Scott Simler

    BZTAT Studios will honor and remember the artwork of the late Scott Simler with an exhibition opening Saturday.

    Simler, a popular and talented artist with disabilities, died on April 28 following a fight with cancer. The Massillon native and Jackson Township resident was 42.

    The Scott Simler Retrospective Art Exhibition will open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and run through Aug. 3 at BZTAT Studios, located inside Canton Creator Space , 730 Market Ave. S.
