    Kids movies Monday, Wednesday

    CANTON – The Summer Kids Movie Series continues at 1 p.m. Monday at the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, with a showing of “Home Alone.” Admission is $2. Doors and the box office open at noon. A sensory-friendly showing of the movie will be at 6:30 p.m. The Summer Kids Movie Series offers affordable, family-friendly movies each Monday afternoon through Aug. 5.

    The Centennial Plaza Movie Series continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a showing of “Elf” outdoors on Centennial Plaza, 330 Court Ave. NW. Admission is free. The movie will be shown rain or shine. In case of severe weather, the movie will be canceled. The Centennial Plaza Movie Series shows family-friendly movies at 7 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 14.

    Public Defender Commission adds Jeffrey Haupt

    CANTON – The judges of the Stark County Common Pleas Court have appointed attorney Jeffrey M. Haupt to serve on the Stark County Public Defender Commission.

    The Stark County public defender provides legal representation to indigent adults and juveniles who face a substantial loss of liberty because of court actions taken against them. The commission meets regularly with the public defender director to review policy, personnel and budget matters. There is no compensation for this volunteer service on the commission.

    McKinley Museum presents Soup at Six on Aug. 8

    CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum's Soup at Six lecture series will host Brian Centrone, guest curator of Massillon Museum's exhibition "Gilding Northeast Ohio," presenting the program "McKinley's New Creases" at 6 p.m. Aug. 8.

    This program will explore the social, cultural and political attitudes toward the adoption of the men’s trousers crease in the late 19th century, particularly how President William McKinley’s adoption of the style shifted fashion allegiance from the Prince of Wales to the U.S. president.

    The cost is $25 per person and includes soup, bread, dessert, a beverage and the program. Pre-paid reservations are required; call 330-455-7043 or visit the events tab at www.McKinleyMuseum.org. The reservation deadline is Aug. 6.

    Learn how to talk to teens about sex

    CANTON – Ohio Guidestone will offer the free presentation “Beyond the Birds and the Bees” from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Stark Library, 715 Market Ave N.

    Learn how to make retirement money last

    EAST CANTON – The Stark Library’s East Canton branch, 224 N. Wood St., will host “Retirement: Making Your Money Last,” presented by an Edward Jones representative, from 5 to 6 p.m. July 29.

    Art in the Park to celebrate mural Saturday

    HARTVILLE – Local artist Iris Menegay will create and unveil her commissioned mural downtown Saturday during Art in the Park. Enjoy live music, dance performances, an artisan market and interactive art exhibits at Deuble Square Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Go on an Art Hunt through downtown shops, collecting pieces of a limited-edition mural puzzle. Complete the puzzle and have Menegay sign your final piece at the mural site.

    High Road to perform Thursday in Hartville

    HARTVILLE – High Road will perform in concert from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hartville Kitchen, 1015 Edison Street NW.

    Free concerts at Duncan Plaza

    MASSILLON – DJ’s Rock & Roll Big Band will perform Thursday, and Visinata will perform July 29 as part of the free Summer Concert Series at Duncan Plaza, 121 Lincoln Way E. Both concerts begin at 7 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket for seating.

    Brown Bag Lunch Lecture this Tuesday

    MASSILLON – Massillon Museum’s free monthly Brown Bag Lunch Lecture from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Tuesday will feature Patricia Edmondson from the Western Reserve Historical Society presenting "Fashion After Dark: How Gaslight and Early Electricity Illuminated Gilded Age Garments."

    This lecture complements the “Gilding Northeast Ohio: Fashion and Fortune 1870-1900” exhibition in Massillon Museum’s Main Gallery, 121 Lincoln Way E. Bring a sack lunch or purchase from Greatness Cafe.

    Music and food trucks Thursday

    NORTH CANTON – Dave Rich and His Enablers will perform a concert of power pop music from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the City Hall front patio, 145 N. Main St., as part of the North Canton Summer Series.

    The food trucks will be Yummy Pita and Boba TLicious. This is the final concert in this year’s North Canton Summer Series.

    Dog Adoption and Wellness Fair is Saturday

    NORTH CANTON – Pawsitive Ohio’s Doggone Dog Adoption and Wellness Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Witwer Park, 301 Harmon St. SW.

    This multi-rescue event will bring groups from all over with dogs available for adoption or application, as well as community organizations, and information for the family involving pet wellness, education and spay/neuter programs. There will be food and vendors.

    Free concert Thursday

    WASHINGTON TWP. − A string quartet from the Canton Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Beech Creek Botanical Garden, 11929 Beech St. NE. The event is part of Stark Parks’ and the Canton Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Serenades in the Park.

    Beekeeping 101 for kids, Catfish with Cops this week

    Stark Parks will offer the following programs this week. Visit StarkParks.com for information and registration for all events and programs.

    • Beekeeping 101: Kids Edition will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Quail Hollow Park, 13480 Congress Lake Ave. NE, Lake Township. Discover the world of honeybees, then suit up and head to the hives to watch the bees in action. Closed-toe shoes are required. Pre-registration is required due to the limited number of bee suits. Registration is required only for kids (grown-ups do not need to register). The program is for ages 6 to 12. Adults must stay with the kid participants. The fee is $5 for in-county residents, and $7 for out-of-county residents.
    • Catfish with Cops will be 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Walborn Reservoir, 11324 Price St. NE, Lexington Township. The fishing event is intended to promote positive interactions between law enforcement and citizens. This will be a catfish contest only, and only shoreline fishing will be permitted. A donation of $5 per person is required, which supports the Stark County Park District Ranger Explorer Program. Registration will begin onsite at 5 p.m. All catfish must be checked in by 11 p.m. to be counted. Prizes will be awarded at 11 p.m.
    • Adventure Kids Open House will be Wednesday at the Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park, 5712 12th St. NW, Perry Township. Drop in anytime between 9 a.m. to noon to enjoy free activities designed for children ages 3 to 9, such as story time, an animal encounter, bug discoveries, crafts and games. No registration is needed.
