CANTON TWP. - The Canton Local Schools Board of Education has named Angela Brown to fill a vacant board seat.

Brown, a district resident since 2014, replaces long-time board member Scott Hamilton who resigned last month, citing politics in a closed-door executive session as his reason for stepping down.

Hamilton's seventh four-year term was set to end at the end of 2025. By state law , the remaining members of the board were required to appoint Hamilton's successor to serve the rest of his term at least 10 days after the board seat became vacant.

Four residents sought consideration for the position including Brown, Jennifer Kluchar, Justin Lonca and Donna Ring.

Brown, a graduate of Ohio State University and a senior product manager in the energy and water industry at Oracle, says she has a passion for bringing families, communities and education together.

She serves as council president at Peace Lutheran Church and actively volunteers for the NEO Girl Scouts. Brown previously volunteered with The Legacy Project at Canton South Middle School, Girls on the Run, Meals on Wheels and Generations of Leaders.

    Why did Hamilton step down?

Hamilton resigned after a recent meeting that included an executive session to "consider the employment, appointment, or discipline of and/or a complaint about a public employee or official."

Hamilton and Board President Tom Kovesci declined to reveal which public employee or official the board members discussed in the meeting.

"I am extremely disappointed with the politics displayed yet again at our board meeting yesterday as well as the division that still exists within our board. Therefore, effective immediately, I am hereby resigning my position on the Canton Local Board of Education," Hamilton wrote in an email to Kovesci.
