Canton, Ohio, a city of nearly 70,000 residents, is known for many things — its scenic outdoor attractions, rich local history and most of all, as the birthplace of the National Football League.

And while the city has made its mark in the world of sports, it is time for local businesses, residents and government leaders to embrace a new opportunity for growth — solar energy.

Stark Solar , a proposed utility-scale solar energy system in Washington Township, will bolster Canton’s economy and bring new opportunities by creating new jobs, generating much-needed tax revenue for essential services and driving new businesses to the region.

The energy system will generate more than $57 million in revenue over 40 years to support local schools, first responders and other government services. This could mean more funding for school security expenses , mentoring programs and educational enrichment opportunities, as well as funding for public libraries and life-saving services.

Stark Solar will also bring new jobs during the project’s construction phase, along with longer-term positions in operations and maintenance. This will attract new talent to the region, while incentivizing businesses to expand their footprint to Canton — meaning new opportunities for job seekers.

The project is scheduled to begin production in 2026 and will generate enough megawatts to power more than 27,000 homes. Stark Solar will also generate electricity for consumers at a lower cost than traditional energy sources, all while helping to reduce emissions in the region.

As the mayor of Canton, I am confident that Stark Solar will boost the city’s economy, create new jobs and provide essential funding to support critical government services in the region.

William V. Sherer II is the mayor of Canton.
