The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo office announced Thursday that work will officially begin next week on the $312 million, four-year widening project of Interstate 27 in Randall County.

Beginning Monday, July 15, crews will close the US 87 to I-27 bridge north of Canyon for concrete barrier installation as part of the I-27 widening project.

The work will take place overnight from 7 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, TxDOT said in an announcement posted on their Facebook page.

TxDOT said in suggested detour details that:

    • Northbound drivers should exit at Buffalo Stadium Road / Country Club Road and follow the frontage roads to southbound I-27.
    • Drivers should take a left on Buffalo Stadium Road / Country Club Road and then follow the northbound I-27 frontage roads to the on-ramp.

"Once this work is complete, crews will continue installing temporary concrete barriers throughout the project’s limits from the US 60 split just north of Canyon to south State Loop (SL) 335 in Amarillo. The installations are expected to be completed in early August and will ensure the safety of construction workers as the widening phase of the project begins," the post stated.

TxDOT said the project is designed to increase safety and mobility on I-27 by widening the interstate from four to six lanes, with all the work expected to be completed in December 2028. According to previous reports, it is the Amarillo District‘s largest project to date, and it also includes work to improve ramps and frontage roads, bridgework, and providing shared-use lanes and sidewalks where applicable.
