A driver who was travelling eastbound on westbound lanes of Interstate 69 was severely injured in a crash Sunday night near Capac.

A news release from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office states dispatchers received a call about a wrong-way driver around 9:30 p.m. Before deputies could arrive on the interstate, a rollover crash involving the driver was called in.

The release states the wrong-way driver was in a 2003 Chevy Malibu and had struck a trailer being pulled by a 2013 Dodge Ram 2500, causing the Malibu to rollover off the interstate.

The driver of the Ram had reportedly tried to avoid the crash and was not injured. The Malibu driver, however, had life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to University of Michigan Ann Arbor for treatment.

    The crash remains under investigation.
