Eastham voters approve two tax overrides to fund education costs and police staffing

Eastham voters overwhelmingly approved three ballot questions on Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Town Clerk's office. Two questions were for significant overrides of Proposition 2 1/2.

Voters said yes (731 to 388) to allowing the town to assess an additional $1,020,000 in real estate and personal property taxes for fund school costs.

They said yes (830 to 288) to funding another $300,000 for hiring, training and providing benefits to two police officers.

And they approved (990 to 111) an amendment to the town charter that would allow the Historical Commission to serve as the Board of Cemetery Commissioners.

Who was elected to Eastham's Elementary School Committee?

Elaine Lipton edged out Sara Rebecca Higgins for a seat on the Elementary School Committee. Lipton garnered 481 votes to Higgins' 441 votes.

The education override will result in a $150 tax increase on a median valued home (approximately $747,000) according to the Town warrant. The override to fund two additional police officers will add an additional $44 in property taxes to the median valued home.
