Horseback rider in Dennis airlifted to Boston hospital. 'Quickly started to deteriorate.'

A horseback riding incident Sunday in Dennis sent a woman to a Boston hospital, according to the Dennis Police Department .

The injured woman was taken by helicopter from the former Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School in South Dennis to Boston Medical Center, according to the police.

"The Dennis Fire Department suspected internal injuries so they made the decision to have her airlifted," said Dennis Police Lt. Peter Benson.

Police were called to 183 Airline Road in East Dennis and found a 20-year-old woman who had fallen off a horse, Benson said.

There were conflicting statements on whether the horse had rolled over on top of the woman, he said. The woman was "scuffed up" but she didn't appear to have any broken limbs, Benson said.

"She was initially up walking around but then she quickly started to deteriorate," Benson said. "She was feeling like she was going to pass out and she was in a good deal of pain."

The Dennis Fire Department was not immediately available Tuesday for comment.

According to Benson, there are a handful of horseback riding facilities in Dennis, along with many individually owned horse stables.

"For the amount of stables we have in the area, and the amount of people who ride horses throughout the local trails, I really don’t recall many of these kinds of incidents over the years," said Benson.
