A Cape Cod resort is No. 1 on national list for waterfront hotel. Can you guess?

With a new beach bar, dining on the lawn, luna day beds, strandkorbs (hooded chairs), a longer boardwalk out into the ocean and a new luxury pontoon boat at the dock, it’s easy to see why Chatham Bars Inn is first on USA Today’s list of 10 best waterfront hotels/resorts .

The awards released Wednesday show Chatham Bars Inn is the only Massachusetts resort that made the list; Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, New Hampshire, is the only other New England property chosen. It ranked number 4.

The description that comes with the award reads:

“With a quarter-mile private beach and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, this classic New England destination has welcomed guests to Cape Cod since 1914. With 25 landscaped acres, poolside and beachfront cabanas and lounges, cottages, and six on-site dining options, there’s a lot to enjoy. Settle into an Adirondack chair, stroll into town, or get out on the water to watch the whales.”

    Let’s look at some specifics:

Chatham Bars Inn, with its on-site fleet of boats, offers sailing, whale watching, charters to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, seal tours of the harbor, fishing and lobstering trips. For a fee, Chatham Bars Inn will cook and serve the catch brought in by guests on those trips. There is also a daily boat shuttle across the harbor, open only to those staying at the inn.

Many of the boat services, as well as booking a private beach clambake for 4 to 8 people, are open to the public and inn guests.

Dining outside to take advantage of the gorgeous ocean view is just what the Beach House Grill restaurant and bar specializes in. Lunch and dinner is offered indoors, outdoors on the deck or at tables in the sand with umbrellas. Enjoy lobster tacos ($44) or a Jonah Crab BLT ($32) for lunch; at dinner, there’s a baked two-pound lobster ($95), a prime filet mignon ($65) or dozens of other choices.

New this season is the Beach Lawn, on the lawn next to the beach. It features a food truck with a wood-fired pizza oven and a retro Airstream bar for cocktails or a selection from the 12-tap beer shed.

All of the dining venues are open to the public.

“We are once again delighted to achieve this distinction. Our resort team continues to offer an extraordinary waterfront experience which attracts guests from all over the world. With beautiful seaside scenery, world-class recreational activities and food and beverage offerings, we enjoy creating long-lasting memories,” Michael Briggs, Chatham Bars managing director, emailed in response to a Cape Cod Times request on Wednesday, after the USA Today awards were announced at noon.
