    Paris 2024 Olympic athlete to run Falmouth Road Race this weekend

    An Olympian from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will run the Falmouth Road Race this weekend.

    Ben Flanagan , 21, and a Bourne resident, competed for Canada in the men's 5,000 meters on Aug. 7. According to his Olympic profile , he was born in Kitchener, Ontario.

    Flanagan is no stranger to the Falmouth Road Race . The University of Michigan alumnus won the race in 2018, 2021 and 2022.

    In 2021, Flanagan told the Cape Cod Times he has "strong roots" on Cape Cod . His wife, Hannah Ghelfi, is a Falmouth native. Her father, Scott Ghelfi, is the Falmouth Road Race president . The two married Oct. 28, 2023, according to Flanagan's Olympic profile.

    The 52nd Falmouth Road Race kicks off at 8:40 a.m. Sunday with the Wheelchair Division, followed by the Elite women's start at 8:50 a.m. The Elite men begin at 9 a.m., and seeded runners and wheelchair duos at 9:03 a.m. The first pulse start for the general field of runners will begin at 9:05 a.m.

    The women's side has some powerhouse runners, too, with the return of Emma Bates and Edna Kiplagat. Bates last raced in Falmouth in 2021 and has become one of America's top marathon runners. She was the top American finisher in both Boston and Chicago. Kiplagat is a two-time Boston Marathon champion, and the 2021 Falmouth Road Race champion.
