Provincetown Carnival 2024: Today's schedule, from the parade to the underwear party

It's Day 6 of Provincetown Carnival Week - parade day !

The Renaissance X Revolution -themed week for 2024 runs from Aug. 17-24. The tip of Cape Cod is expected to be packed with rainbows, feathers, big hair and plenty of costumes with nods to Marie Antoinette and Beyoncé .

In addition to the much-anticipated parade down Commercial Street Aug. 22 - no beads! - the week features pool parties, dance parties, drag queen shows, opportunities to dress up and a boat cruise, to name a few of the summer, celebratory things to do.

Here's some of what's going on today:

Watch the parade

The Provincetown 2024 parade theme is Renaissance X Revolution .

More than 100,000 people are expected to celebrate, many in costume. Past parades have seen as many as 40 floats in a jaw-dropping display of color and creativity. People plan their costumes a year out, said Trevor Pittinger, executive director of the Provincetown Business Guild.

The parade starts at 3 p.m. at the Harbor Hotel, marches down Commercial Street and ends at the Coast Guard Station. Bring water and wear sunblock, organizers urge. There will be no plastic beads thrown this year, and water guns and glitter cannons are not allowed.

See a show − or three

There are at least 8 shows to choose from Thursday. Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be performed at 7:30 p.m. at Fisherman Hall at 12 Winslow St., while Varla Jean: The Errors Tour is 8:30 p.m. at the Crown & Anchor at 247 Commercial St. Also at the Crown & Anchor Thursday night: Who Run the World with QYA at 8 p.m. and Broadway on the Beach at 8:30 p.m.

Party all day

There are five parties Thursday.

The Clam Jam Pool Party runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Crown & Anchor for some pre-parade fun.

The Boatslip Resort and Beach Club has a dance party every day of Carnival at 161 Commercial St. from 4 to 7 p.m. Themes change throughout the week. Aug. 22 is, appropriately, the Parade Day Tea Dance , and is extended an extra hour to 8 p.m.

At night, Tom Yaz's Chart-Topping Video Bar is 9 p.m. and a party held every Thursday and Saturday at the Wave Bar at the Crown & Anchor. At 10 p.m., there are dueling parties - DJ Nomad Technomad at the Underground Bar at 293 Commercial St. and PTown Famous Underwear Party at the Red Room at 258 Commercial St. The Red Room has a free clothing check at the party.
