The National Hurricane Center is watching four disturbances. What they could mean for NE

    2024-09-06

Meteorologists say there are six potential storm threats lurking in the Atlantic Basin, one of which could affect the Northeast this weekend.

In August, AccuWeather meteorologists said this month would be a "supercharged September" in terms of hurricanes, but the first week has been pretty quiet.

There has been a "long lull that has been experienced in recent weeks where there have been no named storms during what is typically a very active time of the hurricane season," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter said in a press release.

Still, with six new tropical storm threats in the Atlantic, meteorologists are saying not to let your guard down.

Here's what to know about the storms.

Will a tropical storm hit Massachusetts this weekend?

So far, it doesn't look like any of the tropical masses out there will directly hit New England, but there is one, 99L, that is off-shore in the Atlantic.

It's currently projected to stay too far-offshore to create much of an impact in New England, though it is predicted to bring increasing surf and rip currents to the coastline, according to the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service is forecasting some rain and wind for Saturday night with precipitation amounts "between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible."

"With the center of (the) circulation becoming better organized and centered more with thunderstorm activity, AccuWeather has dubbed (the) cluster of storms as a tropical rainstorm as well," AccuWeather added, referring to the storm in question.  "An AccuWeather Forecast Eye Path was first issued Thursday to alert families, businesses and leaders along the East coast and in Atlantic Canada about potential impacts."

AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said in a release that he expects the storm to land in Canada at some point this weekend. He added that means there could be strong winds and more than two inches of rain in places like New Brunswick.

The National Hurricane Center currently is also "monitoring three areas for tropical cyclone development in the next seven days," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Invest 99L: Satellite images indicate that a gale-force low pressure system located several hundred miles east of the U.S. Mid-Atlantic coast is producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms that are increasingly taking on a non-tropical structure.

The low is forecast to move north-northeastward at 15 to 20 mph offshore the northeastern United States, reaching colder waters by Friday evening and overnight, and its opportunity to acquire subtropical characteristics appears to be decreasing.

How has the forecast for the hurricane season changed?

Initially, AccuWeather meteorologists were predicting 20-25 hurricanes in total for the 2024 season. But in a release on Aug. 29, AccuWeather changed the overall forecast to 20-23 hurricanes , two less than originally predicted.

How many hurricane are typical for this time of year?

The record number of named storms in the Atlantic basin from Sept. 1 through the end of the season is 16, according to AccuWeather . Meteorologists there say there have been seasons in the past where eight named storms formed in the month of October, and three named storms formed in November.

For the same time period of Aug. 27 to Sept. 30, the historical average is six named storms, according to AccuWeather.

How long does hurricane season last?

The season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 in Massachusetts and the rest of New England.

The operative, narrative word here, is "could"! I'll tell you, ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN", & being prepared is good common sense, no matter where you live. Nature does as it chooses, does it not? Florida has always been a Hotspot for hurricanes, I've lived through many in the 45 years I've lived here, but seriously, you don't think other parts of the country/world aren't affected by nature & it's own reality???🙄
