Supermoon eclipse over Cape Cod: Here's what September's full moon looked like in Harwich

Tuesday's full moon was a supermoon and a partial lunar eclipse.

The full moon - this month called the harvest moon - was expected to peak at 10:34 p.m. last night, according to Space.com .

The partial lunar eclipse winked out part of the moon as the Earth orbited between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow. It was visible from most of North America, all of South America, Europe, all but the easternmost parts of Africa, western portions of Asia and Russia, and parts of Antarctica, according to Space.com .

The effect created "a subtle darkening on the lunar surface," according to the Old Farmer's Almanac , which predicted the moon would reach "maximum obscuration" at 10:44 p.m., with 9% of the moon dark.

    What is a 'supermoon?'

Supermoons occur when full moons coincide with the moon is closest to the earth in its orbit. The moment is what's called perigee.

When this happens, the moon looks 30% brighter and 14% larger than a typical full moon.

    There is one little catch.

"Different publications use slightly different thresholds for deciding when a full moon is close enough to the earth to qualify as a Supermoon ," NASA said. "Because the orbit of the moon is not a perfect circle, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times during its orbit."

What are the names of some other full moons coming up?

    • Oct. 17: Hunter's Moon
    • Nov. 15: Beaver Moon
    • Dec. 15: Cold Moon
