Union County Delays Zoning Update Amid Public Concerns

    2024-05-09

Union County's Planning Commission has decided to postpone a decision on updating zoning regulations for keeping farm animals on residential properties.

The proposal aimed to permit a limited number of chickens and other small farm animals within residential areas, requiring specific conditions for enclosures and distances from property boundaries. However, this proposal met resistance from local residents who raised concerns about potential noise, odors, and the attraction of predators, fearing these could adversely affect their quality of life and property values.

Acknowledging the divisive nature of the proposal, the Planning Commission chose to delay its decision indefinitely to allow for more comprehensive public engagement. Similar zoning changes have been enacted by other communities in the region, pointing to a growing trend of integrating small-scale agricultural activities within residential zones.

The vote was 7-0 vote to table the proposal until the commissioners, city staff and residents can hammer out a more comprehensive amendment before sending it before the Marysville City Council for a final decision.
