Hilliard City Council President Resigns Amid Controversy Over Gaza Peace Resolution

Cynthia Vermillion, the Hilliard City Council president, resigned from her position on May 28, 2024, following significant criticism over a resolution she introduced calling for peace in Gaza.

The resolution, passed by the council on April 22, urged an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in Gaza and called for the release of hostages held by Hamas. The timing of the resolution, coinciding with the first night of Passover, added to the controversy, drawing backlash from pro-Israel groups who perceived it as one-sided and an overreach by the council into international affairs.

Pro-Israel groups, including the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), condemned the resolution's timing as a "blatant act of antisemitism." They argued that passing the resolution on Passover excluded Jewish voices and sent a distressing message to Jewish residents. The JCRC demanded Vermillion's resignation, citing a pattern of ignoring and undermining Jewish perspectives at council meetings.

Conversely, pro-Palestinian activists had pressured the council to adopt the resolution, condemning Israel's military actions in Gaza. Vermillion's resolution aligned with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728, passed on March 25, 2024, which also called for a temporary ceasefire and humanitarian aid access.

Despite the backlash, some residents felt Vermillion's resignation was unnecessary, arguing that she had the right to express her views as an elected official. Vermillion stated that her resignation was intended to refocus the council on local issues, as the resolution had become a significant distraction.

Councilwoman Peggy Hale acknowledged that the resolution could have been worded more inclusively and criticized the handling of the call for peace. An amendment to expand the resolution to call for peace across the entire Middle East, proposed by Hale, failed to pass.

Vermillion issued an apology on April 30, acknowledging that the timing of the resolution "lacked empathy" and was "poorly considered."

Vermillion announced her resignation as Hilliard City Council president at a special council meeting on May 28, 2024. While resigning the presidency, Vermillion said she would continue serving as a council member for the remainder of her term through December 2027 and per the city charter, Vice President Tina Cottone assumed the role of council president immediately following Vermillion's resignation.
