Russells Point, Ohio — Residents of several Ohio counties impacted by the March 14 tornadoes have only a few days left to apply for federal disaster assistance. Homeowners and renters in Auglaize, Crawford, Darke, Delaware, Hancock, Licking, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Richland, and Union counties must submit their applications to FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) by July 1.

According to a FEMA press release issued June 27th, affected individuals should not wait for contractor estimates or insurance settlements to apply. Filing an application by the deadline is crucial, even if additional information or documentation will be needed later.

    FEMA Assistance

FEMA can provide grants for temporary lodging, essential home repairs, and other disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance, such as primary vehicle repair or replacement, medical costs, moving and storage fees, and essential household items. While FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payouts, it can help cover costs that insurance does not.

Applications can be submitted online at DisasterAssistance.gov, via the FEMA mobile app, or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Those using relay services should provide FEMA with their specific service number.

    SBA Disaster Loans

After applying for FEMA assistance, residents can also apply for low-interest disaster loans from the SBA. These loans are available to homeowners, renters, businesses, and private non-profit organizations to cover expenses that FEMA grants do not. Applying for an SBA loan is free, and there is no obligation to accept the loan if approved. More information is available at SBA Disaster Assistance.

    Post-Deadline Assistance

Even after the July 1 deadline, FEMA specialists will remain available at 800-621-3362 to assist with checking application status, updating information, and clarifying FEMA correspondence. Applicants can also monitor their status and submit additional documentation through their DisasterAssistance.gov accounts.
