Ohio Launches Traveler Alert System to Enhance Road Safety During Severe Weather

    2024-05-18

(COLUMBUS, OH) – The Ohio Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA), in collaboration with the National Weather Service Wilmington (NWS Wilmington) Forecast Office and Lamar Advertising, has introduced the Ohio Traveler Alert System (OTAS). According to an Ohio EMA Press Release, the system will display real-time weather alerts on digital billboards to inform motorists of potential severe weather threats.

Initially, 50 billboards in the metropolitan areas of Dayton and Columbus will participate in this program. These billboards will provide crucial weather information regarding severe conditions such as high winds, snow squalls, heavy ice, and flooding. The OTAS is designed to complement existing real-time alert resources like television and radio broadcasts and weather apps.

“The Ohio Traveler Alert System is a great way to keep Ohioans and visitors safe and aware on the roads,” said Sima Merick, Ohio Emergency Management Agency Executive Director. “This potentially lifesaving project will provide critical weather updates to Ohio travelers.”

The billboard alerts will be particularly useful for travelers unfamiliar with the area and local weather hazards, as well as for all drivers unaware of impending severe weather. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and provide essential information to residents and visitors alike.

Following the initial phase in Dayton and Columbus, the program's success will be evaluated, with plans for expansion to other parts of Ohio.

Use the money for improved radar systems and better warning systems many in the state really need.
