A large Roanoke County-based employer will move its corporate headquarters to Texas early next year, but a company spokesperson said few local jobs will be affected.

TMEIC Corporation Americas, a subsidiary of Japan-based TMEIC Corp., will make its new home in a 144,000-square-foot factory that it’s building in Brookshire, Texas, west of Houston and near another company location in Katy, Texas. The new plant will begin operations in October to make utility-scale photovoltaic inverters for solar energy systems and could create about 300 jobs there, the company said.

The company’s local office is on Electric Road in Roanoke County, at the borders of the cities of Roanoke and Salem. After it moves its headquarters in March, TMEIC said, it will continue operating the Roanoke County location to develop automation systems, large motors and other products for a variety of industrial sectors.

“TMEIC’s upcoming headquarters move will involve only a small number of employees relocating from Roanoke to the Houston area,” spokesperson Tricia Downie said in an email. “The company will continue to maintain current staffing levels in Roanoke, with approximately 270 employees continuing to work from our Roanoke location.”

TMEIC Corp. in Japan was founded in 2003 after the industrial systems departments of Toshiba Corp. and Mitsubishi-Electric Corp. merged. The TMEIC initialism stands for Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation.

The company bills itself as a global leader in photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, with more than 50 gigawatts of renewable energy systems installed worldwide as of July and more than 28 gigawatts in North America alone.

“This strategic expansion underscores TMEIC’s dedication to the renewable energy industry, advancing clean energy technology, maintaining strong client relationships, and competing on a global basis while proudly manufacturing in the United States,” Manmeet Bhatia, president and CEO of TMEIC Corporation Americas, said in a news release.
