California Coffee Shop Fires Workers for Blocking Jewish Woman Over Anti-Semitic Graffiti

    2023-12-11
    • Three employees at Farley's East in Oakland were fired for blocking a Jewish woman from documenting anti-Semitic graffiti.
    • The incident escalated when staff tried to prevent the woman from entering the restroom.
    • Farley's East issued a public apology and stressed their commitment against hate and for a safe, welcoming environment.

At Farley's East Coffee Shop in Oakland, a situation arose involving three staff members and a Jewish woman.

The woman attempted to take a picture of anti-Semitic graffiti in the bathroom, which included messages like 'Zionism = Fascism' and 'your neutrality is enabling genocide'. The employees blocked her entry, leading to a confrontation. One staff member made a contentious remark about Israel and private property.

The café initially responded with an apology and corrective measures against the staff. However, as the incident received public attention and backlash, the owners, Amy and Chris Hillyard, decided to terminate the employment of the three staff members involved. They reiterated their stance against hate and emphasized the café's vision of creating a safe space for everyone. The Hillyards acknowledged the fear and tension such incidents bring to the Jewish community and assured that hate acts wouldn't be tolerated in their business. The incident ended with the woman being allowed to document the graffiti and the café taking steps to remove the offensive messages and retrain staff.
