Nebraska Priest Fatally Stabbed, Suspect Found in Human Cross Formation

    2023-12-13
    • Kierre L. Williams is accused of murdering Fr. Stephen Gutgsell in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.
    • Williams was found lying in a cross formation across Gutgsell's body.
    • Both the suspect and the victim had previous legal troubles, including Williams' past cocaine possession and evasion charges, and Gutgsell's embezzlement conviction.

In a disturbing incident in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Kierre L. Williams, 43, is charged with the murder of 65-year-old priest Fr. Stephen Gutgsell.

According to court documents, when police arrived at the scene, they found Williams covered in blood and lying across Gutgsell's body in a cross shape. This bizarre act occurred at St. John the Baptist rectory.

Williams, who hails from Sioux County, Iowa, has a criminal history, including past offenses for cocaine possession and evading police in Florida in 2008. Gutgsell, the victim, also had legal issues. He was previously convicted of embezzling $125,000 from his Omaha congregation, although police have ruled out any connection between this conviction and his murder.

Fr. Gutgsell was rushed to a hospital in Omaha where he later succumbed to his stab injuries. The police investigation revealed a knife in the priest's bedroom and significant blood evidence. Williams was taken into custody, with precautions taken to preserve DNA evidence. Interestingly, Gutgsell's brother, Fr. Michael Gutgsell, also faced legal issues, having been accused of stealing from his parish. The motives behind the murder and the relationship between Williams and Gutgsell, if any, remain unclear.
