Ten-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized After Eating Fentanyl-Laced Gummies at Elementary School

    2023-12-14
    • Nicole Sanders and Clifford Dugan Jr. were arrested after seven fourth graders at Central Elementary School in Amherst County, Virginia, ingested gummies laced with fentanyl.
    • Five of these children experienced severe symptoms like nausea, headaches, and muscle spasms, necessitating hospitalization.
    • The tainted gummies were brought to school by a child under the care of Sanders and Dugan, with the bag testing positive for fentanyl.

In a distressing incident at Central Elementary School in Amherst County, Virginia, two adults, Nicole Sanders and Clifford Dugan Jr., have been charged following an alarming event where seven fourth-grade students consumed gummies laced with fentanyl.

The children, after sharing the candy during lunch, started showing symptoms of nausea, headaches, and muscle spasms. Five of them were urgently taken to the hospital for treatment.

The gummies were brought into the school by a child under the care of Sanders and Dugan. Hayden Floyd, a ten-year-old affected student, described the gummies as tasting strange and causing nausea and shaking. The school authorities confirmed that the bag carrying the gummies tested positive for fentanyl, a potent opioid.

Amherst County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. William Wells highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating that the fentanyl originated from a home and not the school. The school underwent thorough cleaning, and principals were reminded of the importance of not sharing food. In addition to the charges related to the incident, Dugan faces an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
