13-Year-Old Charged with Planning Mass Shooting at Ohio Synagogue

    2023-12-14
    • A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in Ohio for planning a mass shooting at Temple Israel synagogue.
    • The plot was uncovered after posts were found on the Discord chat service.
    • The boy faces charges of inducing panic and disorderly conduct, with a trial scheduled for December 20.

A 13-year-old boy in Ohio has been arrested and charged with the grave act of planning a mass shooting at Temple Israel synagogue in Canton.

This alarming plot came to light on September 1, significantly ahead of a devastating Hamas attack on Israel, which claimed over 1,200 lives and escalated tensions in the Middle East.

Authorities became aware of the teen's alleged intentions through Discord, an online chat platform, where his 'detailed plan' was discovered. The Stark County Sheriff's Office took swift action, alerting key figures and agencies within the school system.

Rabbi David Komerofsky of Temple Israel, however, has chosen not to comment on the case, citing the involvement of a minor. The unnamed boy now faces charges of inducing panic and disorderly conduct, and his trial is set for December 20 in Stark County Family Court.

This case emerges amidst a worrying surge in antisemitism across the United States. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a staggering 388 percent increase in antisemitic incidents following Hamas' attack on October 7. This includes various forms of harassment, vandalism, and assault. In contrast to the 64 incidents recorded during the same period in 2022, the ADL's preliminary data showed 312 U.S. antisemitic incidents between October 7 and 23.

The rise in antisemitism is not a new trend in the U.S., as nearly 3,700 such incidents were recorded in 2022, the highest since the ADL began tracking in 1979. Jonathan Greenblatt of the ADL has pointed out that antisemitism is becoming normalized and is present in various forms, from far-right to hard-left ideologies, affecting businesses and individuals alike.
