New York City faced a sudden and chaotic power outage late Thursday night, attributed to a fault at a Con Edison power plant in Brooklyn.

The incident, which occurred just after midnight, was marked by black smoke emerging from the facility and brief power cuts across the city. This disruption led to a temporary plunge into chaos, with numerous reports of New Yorkers trapped in elevators and subway riders delayed for up to 20 minutes.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) was promptly deployed to rescue individuals from elevators. Notably, a security guard at a Wegmans store in Brooklyn was saved by firefighters. Additionally, Grand Central Station was forced to shut down all elevators and escalators due to the power issue.

Con Edison has acknowledged the problem, stating it was caused by a fault in a power line at their John Street facility in Dumbo. Although most electricity services have been restored, the company is still investigating the exact cause of the fault and working on necessary repairs.

During the outage, residents reported various experiences, from hearing an 'explosion' to feeling a rumble. The incident left many in confusion and concern, with the impact being felt across different parts of the city. The FDNY emphasized the widespread nature of the calls they received, indicating the broad impact of the outage.
