Woman Sentenced to 15 Years for Killing Mother with Glass Table and Shard

    2023-12-22
    • Hend Bustami, 29, sentenced to at least 15 years for second-degree murder of her mother, Afaf Hussanen.
    • The murder occurred in October 2022, involving a glass table and a stabbing.
    • Bustami had previously claimed she was 'too pretty' to be arrested after an incident at Harry Reid International Airport.

Hend Bustami, a 29-year-old Las Vegas woman, has been sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison for the second-degree murder of her mother, 61-year-old Afaf Hussanen.

The murder, which occurred in October 2022, was a result of an argument over cigarettes. Bustami admitted to hitting her mother with a glass end table and subsequently stabbing her with a broken piece. This sentencing comes after Bustami's infamous incident a month prior at Harry Reid International Airport, where she was arrested for dine-and-dashing at an airport restaurant and claimed she was 'too pretty' to be arrested.

Bustami, who pleaded 'guilty but mentally ill,' was found competent enough to stand trial, with her mental illness acknowledged at the time of the offense. Her mental health history includes several diagnoses of psychoses and disorders. As part of her sentence, Bustami is required to receive medical care for her mental illness. She will be eligible for parole in 2037, with credit for time served. Judge Jacqueline Bluth emphasized the necessity of mental health treatment for Bustami during her incarceration. This case has drawn considerable attention due to the bizarre nature of Bustami's earlier arrest and her subsequent violent act.
