Mexican Officials Accused of Aiding Illegal Migrant Crossings into Texas

    2023-12-22
    • A significant increase in migrants crossing into Eagle Pass, Texas, with claims that Mexican officials are instructing them on illegal entry.
    • Migrants report extortion and mistreatment by Mexican authorities, leading to a surge in illegal crossings.
    • Over 14,000 migrants entered Eagle Pass in one week, causing a strain on resources and border control efforts.

Migrants crossing into Eagle Pass, Texas, have reported a staggering increase in numbers, with over 14,000 entries in a single week.

According to these migrants, Mexican officials are not only failing to deter their journey but are allegedly instructing them on how to cross illegally into the United States. This claim marks a significant shift from previous practices where Mexican officials detained migrants, often sending them back to the Mexico-Guatemala border.

Many migrants have shared experiences of extortion and discrimination at the hands of Mexican authorities. A Venezuelan couple recounted being sent back to Mexico's southern border, a move they initially feared would lead to deportation. However, after a period of detention, they were released alongside others, suggesting a coordinated effort to manage migrant movements.

The situation in Eagle Pass has reached a critical point, with Border Patrol agents running out of space to process migrants, resulting in make-shift holding centers. The recent surge is attributed to Mexican officials releasing thousands from shelters, guiding them to specific river crossing points, and providing information on shallower water areas.

This influx of migrants, including families and children, has overwhelmed local resources. The town, with a population of just 28,000, has seen nearly 10,000 migrants enter in an 82-hour period. Local Congressman Tony Gonzales has described the crisis as spiraling out of control, highlighting the urgent need for a response to this unprecedented situation.
