Idaho Prosecutors Push for Summer Trial in Bryan Kohberger Murder Case

    2023-12-22
    • Idaho prosecutors request summer 2024 trial for Bryan Kohberger to avoid university session.
    • Kohberger faces charges for the murder of four University of Idaho students in November 2022.
    • The trial duration is expected to be six weeks; the crime scene is set for demolition.

Idaho prosecutors have proposed holding the trial of Bryan Kohberger, accused of murdering four university students, during the summer of 2024.

This scheduling aims to avoid conflict with the academic calendar of the University of Idaho and other nearby schools. Kohberger, 28, is charged with the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Maddie Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, who were killed while asleep in November 2022.

The prosecutors' motion follows a visit by Kohberger's defense team to the crime scene, an off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho, which is scheduled for demolition on December 28. The filing highlights concerns about lodging availability and media presence during the trial, suggesting trial hours from 8:30 am to 3 pm for jury convenience and preparation time.

Additionally, the prosecutors assert that Kohberger's lawyers have had ample opportunity to present an alibi. A judge has already entered a not-guilty plea on Kohberger's behalf, and a previous motion to dismiss the case, citing grand jury instructions, was denied.

Kohberger, a former criminology PhD student, is accused of breaking into the students' home and committing the murders. The crime scene's impending demolition has raised concerns about preserving evidence, with some legal experts emphasizing the importance of the jury visiting the actual scene.

Kohberger has waived his right to a speedy trial, which has led to an indefinite delay in proceedings. He maintains his innocence, and due to a gag order, details of the case are limited. The trial, initially set for October 2023, was postponed following Kohberger's waiver.
