Alex Batty Learns Life Lessons from Harry Potter During Six-Year Absence

    2023-12-23
    • Alex Batty, 17, self-educated by reading J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series during his six years missing.
    • He read each book in the series at least 20 times while traveling through Europe with his mother and grandfather.
    • Alex recently escaped and reunited with his grandmother in England, aspiring to work in IT.

Alex Batty, a 17-year-old British boy, taught himself during his six-year absence by repeatedly reading J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books.

He and his mother, Melanie Batty, along with his grandfather, David, lived a nomadic lifestyle across Europe after his alleged abduction at the age of 11. With limited access to wifi, Alex turned to the Harry Potter series, reading each of the seven books at least 20 times.

Alex's life was marked by isolation from his peers and a lack of formal education since his disappearance in October 2017. He shared his disillusionment with his life, influenced by his mother's 'anti-government' and 'anti-vax' beliefs. His attempts to enroll in a French school for IT studies were thwarted when his identity aroused suspicion, leading to police involvement.

This December, Alex made a daring escape to return to his family in England, reuniting with his grandmother, Susan Caruana, in Greater Manchester. Despite the challenges, Alex nurtured his passion for Harry Potter, carrying the box set everywhere, and independently learned languages, math, and computing from textbooks. His mother remains at large, and the Greater Manchester Police have initiated a criminal investigation into Alex's alleged kidnapping. Alex's experience highlights the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit in the face of extraordinary circumstances.
