Texas Governor Defies NYC Mayor's Order, Sends Migrants During New Year's Eve

    2024-01-01
    • Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ignored NYC Mayor Eric Adams' executive order regarding the arrival times of migrants in the city.
    • A bus from El Paso, Texas, carrying about 50 asylum seekers, including women and children, is expected to arrive in New York City just before midnight on New Year's Eve.
    • This defiance by Texas comes amidst a broader struggle by cities like New York, Chicago, and Denver to manage the surge in migrant arrivals.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has recently defied an executive order issued by NYC Mayor Eric Adams that stipulates the specific times when migrants can arrive in the city.

According to the executive order, buses transporting migrants to Port Authority in New York City are only permitted to arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. from Monday to Friday, unless granted special permission.

Despite this directive, a bus loaded with around 50 asylum seekers, including women and children, departed from El Paso, Texas on a Saturday morning. The bus is scheduled to reach New York City on Sunday night, just before the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. This timing coincides with the New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square, where the iconic ball drop occurs.

The situation in Texas is part of a larger national issue, as cities like Chicago and Denver join New York in grappling with the increasing number of migrants. The mayors of these cities have held joint press conferences to address the crisis. Meanwhile, the state of Texas has not confirmed whether they received permission to deviate from Mayor Adams' specified migrant arrival times.

The migrants themselves express a desire to work and contribute positively to their new communities. This ongoing situation underscores the complex challenges faced by both the migrants seeking better lives and the cities striving to manage their arrival and integration.

In the backdrop of this individual incident, the broader context includes over 12,500 migrants sent to Washington, D.C., over 33,600 to New York City, and substantial numbers to other cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, and Los Angeles since mid-2022. These figures, provided by the Office of Governor Greg Abbott, highlight the extensive scale of migrant movements from Texas to various U.S. cities.
