Loud Explosions and Shaking Alarm Residents on Roosevelt Island

    2024-01-02
    • An emergency response was triggered on New York's Roosevelt Island due to three distinct booms and shakes early Tuesday morning.
    • The New York Fire Department (FDNY) is actively investigating the cause, with speculations around transformer-related incidents and manhole fires.
    • No injuries have been reported, but significant power outages and widespread vibrations were felt, extending as far as Astoria across the East River.

New York City's Roosevelt Island experienced a significant emergency situation early Tuesday morning, prompting a major response from firefighters and other emergency services. Residents reported being jolted awake by at least three loud booms accompanied by shaking, with the third instance being felt over a broader area. The FDNY was dispatched to the 580 block of Main Street, near the Roosevelt Island Bridge & Tram, around 6 am following reports of explosions and building tremors.

The source of the disturbance is still under investigation, with a hypothesis involving a transformer, which is used to transfer electric energy between circuits while modifying voltage levels. Emergency responders across Roosevelt Island, Manhattan, and Queens reported feeling the vibrations. Additionally, multiple maintenance hole fires are being probed by the FDNY.

The impact of the incident was widespread, with residents reporting shaking walls and rattling windows. People from as far away as Astoria, across the East River, were also awakened by the loud noises. Despite the alarming situation, there have been no reported injuries. Emergency services, including a large contingent of fire trucks and police vehicles, were present at the scene, with efforts ongoing to determine the cause of the booms and shakes.
