    2024-01-07
    • A tornado touched down in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday evening near Las Olas Boulevard and the Intracoastal Waterway.

    • Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue performed an extensive area assessment; the storm dissipated by 6:30 pm.

In a dramatic incident, Fort Lauderdale witnessed a tornado touchdown on Saturday, triggering tornado warnings across Broward County.

The event unfolded around 6 pm when the tornado formed over land and moved towards downtown Fort Lauderdale. Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where they encountered damage to a boat on Las Olas Circle and a house on Southeast 10th Street.

The tornado was particularly impactful near the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard and the Intracoastal Waterway. According to Battalion Chief Garrett Pingol, it made contact with structures, power lines, and marine vessels before moving eastwards towards the ocean. Despite the extent of the tornado’s path, there were no reports of injuries or significant property damage. Some boats sustained minor damages.

Fort Lauderdale City released a statement acknowledging the tornado's touchdown and urged the public to stay cautious of debris and downed power lines. The statement highlighted the minor nature of the damage and the absence of injuries. Residents, like Jeff Turk, experienced the tornado warning first-hand, with Turk witnessing the event from his boat at Bahia Mar Marina. The incident coincides with reports of severe weather across Florida, including funnel clouds and damaging wind gusts, as part of a broader weather pattern involving a powerful nor'easter affecting the East Coast. Florida anticipates more extreme weather in the coming days due to another potent storm moving across the eastern United States.
