Ohio Mother Accused of Faking Daughter's Cancer for Donations

    2024-01-11
    • Pamela Reed, 41, faked her daughter's cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, for financial gain.
    • She raised funds online and posted photos of her daughter's supposed treatment.
    • A school nurse's suspicions led to an investigation that uncovered the deceit.

Pamela Reed, a 41-year-old mother from Ohio, has been charged with theft by deception for falsely claiming that her seven-year-old daughter, Addey Rae, suffered from Acute Myeloid Leukemia and other medical conditions. Reed's elaborate deception involved shaving her daughter's head, fabricating health conditions, and administering unnecessary medications. She also created a public Facebook page, 'Our "Rae" Of Sunshine- Team Addey Rae', where she posted distressing images of her daughter, ostensibly undergoing treatment for cancer.

The ruse began to unravel when a school nurse at Addey's elementary school noticed discrepancies in her supposed health conditions, particularly the claim that Addey was blind in her right eye. This led to an investigation by the Noble County Sheriff's Office, which confirmed that Addey did not have cancer. Shockingly, Reed had subjected her daughter to over 280 hours of missed school, unnecessary blood tests, and other medical procedures based on fabricated illnesses.

Reed's deceit extended to the financial exploitation of her daughter's fabricated illness. She received approximately $8,000 from a local organization for Addey's supposed cancer treatment expenses, which she kept for personal use. Furthermore, Reed admitted to relabeling other medications as cancer drugs and feeding them to Addey, along with anti-seizure medication. Her motivation, as confessed to the authorities, was the enjoyment of the support and attention garnered through this scheme.

The case has raised significant concerns about child safety, with the Noble County Sheriff's Office emphasizing the importance of reporting suspicions of abuse and neglect. Reed's bond has been set at $50,000, and the case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding child abuse and the critical role of vigilance in the community.
