Experts warn about splash pad risks during the summer

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. (KOAM) -- Splash pads can be a popular place to cool down in the summer, but the CDC says they could expose children to bacteria.

Shiloh Sluder, a camp counselor, says that its important to make sure kids at the splash pad are not sick.

"If you see your kid is not feeling well, just go ahead and take them out of the splash pad, take them home so like we can keep everyone safe and we can keep the splash pad bacteria free", said Sluder.

According to the CDC, between 2021 and 2023, three young kids died from a brain infecting amoeba, after playing at a splash pad.

They recommend that kids avoid accidentally swallow water from the splash pad.

The CDC says that not all splash pads are required to disinfect the water, which means contaminated water can recirculate and cause illnesses.
