MAHOPAC, N.Y. — Dozens of area kids got an introduction to angling at Sycamore Park at this weekend’s Town of Carmel Fishing Deby. Organized by Councilman Robert Kearns in partnership with the Putnam Federation of Sporting Clubs, Kent Rod and Gun Club, the Oasis Club, and Fish On Bait Shop, the free outing gave 50 local children a lesson in fishing and more. Members of the Carmel and Kent police departments—both human and canine—were also on hand to help out.

“Every child received a free pole, tackle box with hooks, bobbers, and worms,” Kearns said. “I want to thank the Carmel and Kent PD for volunteering their time. Our officers introduced K9 Pietro and K9 Saber, performed a demonstration, and taught the children all about what they do.”

Kearns said Carmel Recreation and Parks director Nina Kallmeyer and the entire department team helped make the event a success, while Mike Tozz coordinated the donations of all the gear. With such a big turnout, Kearns said he hopes to make the derby an annual event.

“We look forward to hosting it again next year!” Kearns said.
