Aaron and Alex Shackell are Carmel, Indiana, teenage siblings who have qualified to swim in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Aaron Shackell , 19, won the 400-meter freestyle in the trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. “For me, I always dreamed of performing in front of a basketball arena or a football stadium, at least as a kid," he said. "In swimming, you don’t always have the opportunity to put on a show in front of 20,000 fans. It’s everything to me.”

Aaron Shackell won the 100-yard butterfly in the 2022 IHSAA championships, as well as the 500 freestyle in '23. He has also been part of four championship relays. He has swum for the University of California and will transfer to the University of Texas.

Alex Shackell , 17, finished second in the 200-meter butterfly, and sixth in the 200-meter freestyle to earn a spot in the 4x200 relay group. She's the first swimmer from the dominant Carmel High School girls program to qualify for an Olympics. “I never celebrate,” Shackell said after her butterfly final. “I smacked the water, and I was like, ‘I earned that.’“

Alex Shackell, who will be a senior in 2024-25, won the 100-yard butterfly in the 2022 and '24 IHSAA championships, as well as the 50 free in '23 and '24, and 100 back in '24. Her fly and free 2024 titles both came in state record time. She has also been part of seven championship relays.
