Here's why Gov. Newsom is urging Oakland to update strict police pursuit policy
Governor Gavin Newsom is urging Oakland city leaders to revise the city's police pursuit policy.He sent a letter to Mayor Sheng Thao, the City Council, and the police department.MORE: Gov. Newsom says CHP expanding patrols to reduce crime in Oakland"CHP has brought to my attention that they observed criminals often fleeing with impunity because it's common knowledge that the Oakland Police Department's pursuit policy allows vehicle pursuits in only very limited circumstances," Newsom said in the letter. PG&E profits soar, powered by increases in electricity and gas revenue
OAKLAND — PG&E profits soared during its second quarter, powered by higher monthly bills that are rising far faster than the Bay Area’s overall inflation rate. During the April through June second quarter, PG&E posted a profit of $520 million — up 28.1% from the utility titan’s profits from the same three-month period the year before, the company reported Thursday.
Improvements coming to Front Street in Soledad with new project
SOLEDAD, Calif. — The city of Soledad will begin its newly approved Front Street Maintenance Project on Monday to address pavement conditions. The work will take place along Front Street between Nestles and Moranda Road to repair damages to the curb, gutter and sidewalk areas. Tree root uplifting resulted in drainage issues and pedestrian and ADA accessibility issues.
Greenfield cancer survivor leads Kiddie Kapers Parade as grand marshal
GREENFIELD — Greenfield’s Kelly Mata Navarro, a 12-year-old cancer survivor, was the grand marshal for this year’s California Rodeo Salinas’ Kiddie Kapers Parade. Navarro waved to the thousands of people lining the sides of South Main Street on July 14 from the back of a 1966 Ford Mustang, near the front of the parade lineup. Parade participants were mostly youth, ranging from babies in strollers up to a high school marching band.
Swift response contains Metz Fire to 1,100 acres in South Monterey County
GREENFIELD — South Monterey County faced an unexpected challenge in the heart of a warm summer afternoon Tuesday. Around 2 p.m. on July 23, the usually tranquil fields near Greenfield were suddenly ablaze as a fire broke out on Metz Road. Fueled by strong winds, the fire rapidly spread to an alarming 1,100 acres by evening with only 5% containment.
