Carnegie resident amplifies philanthropic efforts as Mrs. US Galaxy 2024
You may think of a haircut as not such a big a deal. Carnegie resident Sandahl Taylor begs to differ. “It can really change somebody’s life,” she said. “You can see somebody be able to get a job. It can provide them with hope. And it can simply tell them that they’re worthy of someone caring for them.”
RMU Men’s Basketball Finalizes 2024-25 Roster With Eight New Additions
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU Men's Basketball Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andrew Toole has announced the Colonials' 2024-25 roster. "As we round out our roster for the 2024-25 season, there were a number of areas we felt we needed to improve upon, beginning with our ability to guard the basketball. We wanted to find some guys that were athletic, aggressive and committed to the defensive side of the floor as well as guys that can create an advantage offensively – those were our number one priorities," said Toole.

Schizophrenia, stigma and systems hold many back, and made it tough to celebrate my hard-won tenure
Dr. Nev Jones poses for a portrait in her office in the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh's campus on June 25, 2024. (Jess Daninhirsch/PublicSource) Three months ago, I was officially notified that I’d received tenure (and promotion to associate professor) in the School of Social Work here at the University of Pittsburgh. Tenure is a big deal for anyone — even against a backdrop of escalating political hostility toward higher ed — but particularly meaningful after a history marked by experiences in which I’d been told, over and over, that I wouldn’t or couldn’t make it.
Live Updates: Trump rally shooting investigation continues as details emerge
New details continue to emerge in the investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, who is now at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee with his ear still bandaged and with increased security evident around him. The gunman's motive in the Saturday attack on the president remains unclear four days after he opened fire at Trump's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania — injuring Trump and two others, and killing a rallygoer. The U.S. Secret Service is facing mounting questions about the security flaws that allowed the shooter to fire from a rooftop near the rally.Eric Trump, the...
Trump shooter’s gun club defends its culture: ‘That’s not us’
A gun club nestled in heavy woods on the outskirts of Pittsburgh was thrust into the national spotlight after one of its members tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump on Saturday. Clairton Sportsmen’s Club denounced the "senseless act of violence" in a statement Sunday, acknowledging that the shooter, Thomas...
Few residents opt out of $600 million class action settlement in East Palestine, Ohio, derailment
Few people ultimately opted out of the $600 million class action settlement Norfolk Southern offered to people affected by last year's disastrous East Palestine train derailment despite the questions residents raised about the deal, lawyers said. The plaintiffs' attorneys said only 22 of the nearly 2,000 households in the small...

Bethel Park, Butler and Milwaukee, and how MAGA hate persists
I grew up in Peters Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh that buttresses Bethel Park, the community where Donald Trump’s would-be assassin, James Crooks, lived. Bethel Park was a rival to Peters Township in many ways, especially when our sports teams faced each other. We disliked each other when those games occurred. And though there may have been a township line that divided the two communities, in so many ways, Bethel and Peters just blended together. The phrase “A great place to raise a family” comes to mind.
Editorial: Rustic Ridge report doesn't deliver final answer
Investigations give us answers. They do not necessarily make us feel better. On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission delivered an answer to a question lingering since August. Did the Peoples Gas service lines play a part in the Rustic Ridge explosion that claimed six lives, obliterated three homes and caused even more damage?
Florida Democratic Congressman Supports Investigations Into Secret Service at Trump Assassination Attempt
Florida Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D) issued the following statement on the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania:. “The assassination attempt to take former President Trump’s life this weekend was not only a chilling moment in our country’s history but also a security failure,” Moskowitz said. “As the former Emergency Management Director for Florida, I believe there was a fundamental breakdown by law enforcement that we must urgently investigate and address to prevent future incidents. I applaud President Biden and Speaker Johnson’s bipartisan calls for an independent investigation and congressional leaders taking action to get to the bottom of this national tragedy. As someone whose hometown of Parkland was devastated by gun violence, I mourn for the attendee at the rally who lost their life and for the survivors whose lives will never be the same. Now is not the time for partisan politics or making baseless accusations to foment more violence. Now is the time to lower the temperature and condemn political violence no matter what side of the aisle you are on.”
