The New York State DEC told New Yorkers to be on the lookout in pools and trees for an invasive insect that attacks and kills maple and other hardwood trees. According to the DEC, the Asian longhorned beetle, or 'ALB,' is "an invasive wood-boring insect that feeds on a variety of hardwoods, including maple, birch, elm, ash, poplar, horse chestnut, and willow."

‘Erratic’ NY state police recruit tries to grab training officer’s gun at Cazenovia academy, troopers say
Cazenovia, N.Y. — A recruit for the New York State Police was charged after trying to take a training officer’s loaded gun last week. The recruit, Jose L. Valeriano, 22, was meeting around 10 p.m. last Tuesday, July 23, with Trooper Cory Sprague when he started acting “erratically” and lunged for Sprague’s gun, according to Beau Duffy, a state police spokesperson.
